The Abditory

Why is it that I always find myself more exhausted after a long weekend than before it? I imagine the answer to that question lies somewhere in this post.

This past weekend was a busy 3-day 2-day weekend. Both Saturday and Monday were reasonably relaxing. For the most part, we just hung out and got some stuff done. I bottled another batch of beer (my first witbier!), we watched some movies, we she washed cats. These two relaxing days were broken up by a busier Sunday than I can recall having in recent times. Back when our group of friends all lived within close proximity to one another (Brent notwithstanding, as he defected across the river to SC), we had fairly regular themed dinner nights. We would collectively decide on a menu (or one would be dictated by some overzealous participant) and everyone would bring ingredients with them. All preparation and cooking was done on location.

We always had a great time, but it took forever. Typically we’d arrive around 7pm or so (waits for sarcastic comment about me always being late). The menu was typically complex enough that preparation and cooking would take hours. It seemed like we rarely were eating before 10 or 11pm and some nights it was even later.

Now that everyone is scattered, it seems like a waste to get people together just to cook for several hours then finally get to sit down and enjoy a meal and catch up for a bit before people start falling asleep (or throwing up on Brent’s floor). So, the idea for a home brewed beer fest was pitched. (continue reading…)
